San Diego, Marina Longboard Wipeout
Recently we took a trip down to San Diego California, we being myself, my boss, another employee and the board of directors executive, seven of us in total. The purpose of our trip was attendance at the National Association of Realtors conference, our first conference travel since the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic.
The conference held a full schedule with education sessions, general assemblies, committee meetings, networking receptions etc. and while I knew it would be busy, I also knew that there would be at least a couple hours I could carve out for myself and with the conference being at the San Diego Convention Center right on the Marina I knew there’d be spaces that I’d love to longboard.
The plan was to try and find a surf skate board while I was down there, but with not knowing when or if I’d actually be able to find and purchase one I decided to take a couple longboards with me.
Stowing my longboards in a golf club travel bag was almost a mistake as CATSA the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority decided to inspect my bag and delayed it’s arrival by a day in San Diego – I wasn’t happy to realize that was why the bag was late.
When Sunday morning arrived and I had a window of opportunity to get out and longboard, I started with heading out from the hotel towards the marina, carefully trying not to bomb down the hill to crazily. I then proceeded out along the Marina boardwalk following it for a little over an hour. The sights were great even checked out The Midway aircraft carrier (just from the parking lot) and a number of other sites along the way.
As I made my way around the bay, a little past the Harbor Police Department I decided to head back, opting to do so on a Bird Scooter rental so that I had time to spend some more time skating around the Marina. I was originally going to try and make it to Point Loma but realized I wasn’t going to.
Riding the Bird Scooters are fun but they’re governed at 14 mph which is a little lame, and their lane mapping which controls where they will run is off in some areas including along North Harbor Drive where at times I had to push the scooter or ride precariously out of the bike lane and into the traffic lane to maintain power to the wheels.
Having arrived back at the Marina near the convention center I took another rip around the Harbor, this time not seeing a section of boardwalk where 4 bricks had been removed, my front wheels and trucks dropped in the whole, stopping the board instantly and sending me flying forward in my best superman impression onto the concrete, smashing my elbow, shoulder and wrist in the process and destroying my watch.
This is a quick point of view video of the wipeout
